Week Thirty

This was a very short week. The French Bac is comprised of two parts, a written piece and an oral/discussion. As part of the preparation the students of my grade had the opportunity to do a practice oral. Because of this we didn’t have French class all week because the teacher was one the evaluators. My math teacher was also absent all week because she fell off a horse. My Economics had a previous engagement Friday so we got out of two hours of that course. All in all it shaped up to be a really light week. I didn’t get to profit from this glorious week though. I, instead went to Germany to see my mom, which wasn’t that bad either!

I went to school Monday and Tuesday and then left Wednesday morning. I took the train to Strasburg and then from Strasburg to Frankfurt where I met my mom. he only thing was I took the wrong train reduction card when I was leaving the house so I had some small issues with the controller. It was great to see her after all this time! It’s weird when you’re on exchange you get used to missing people so you sort of forget the you miss them. But let me tell you when you finally see someone after months of not seeing him or her it all kind of comes back and you feel so great. T

The first night we sort of took it easy. I got to Frankfurt at about 4 in the afternoon so we just sort of walked around the city and ate at a really good Italian restaurant. I actually chose a really weird time to go to Frankfurt. It was like everything was aligning in just the right order. This time it was a little weird though. There were a lot of protests in Frankfurt during the day Wednesday because of something with the European Union. The result of these protests, which were pretty much finished by the time I got there was that there were a bunch of police everywhere. I heard so many sirens and I think we saw over 100 police trucks plus police dressed in full riot gear. While trying to find a cab we accidentally walked into this hoard of police officers in darth vader gear that was sort of freaky. In the end it all worked out and we got the restaurant and hotel fine.

Thursday we went to a modern art museum. I have so say I think modern art is cool but I’m not sure that I totally get it. It sometimes just strikes me as a little strange. We spent the rest of the day hanging around the city, walking around and shopping. We ate lunch at another Italian place. That night we went to an opera. I didn’t think I was that into opera but it was actually very good. It was La Bohème. It was very well done and the singing was incredible. It was a little funny because it was sung in Italian with subtitles in German. In the end I think we really understood the over arching story even if we didn’t get all the words. I’m not sure how much you need every word to understand an opera.

Friday we went to a huge botanical garden on one of the college’s campus. It was beautiful and I would have loved to spend more time there and I would love to go back. I actually really liked the city and would love to go back sometime. We spent the rest of the day doing all the other stuff we wanted to do and finished our exploring. At lunch we ate in a German restaurant. I ordered a pork thing and I asked the waitress if it was small enough that I could eat it all and she said “Oh, yeah, it’s a little big but it’s good for you!” Anyway I should’ve known it was a lie but she came back with a ham the size of my head. It’s safe to say that I was not capable of finishing it. We ate in an incredible French restaurant for dinner.

Saturday morning was sad. She had to get up really early to catch her flight out and I had to catch my train. It’s always sad saying goodbye but I know that it’s only going to be three more months before we see each other again. On my way to the train station I stopped in a little store to buy some post cards and it turned out the vendor was French so I spoke French with him, he corrected my French as well. I caught my train and didn’t have any problems getting back home again.

Sunday, we went to a costal city called Pornic to see some family relatives. It was nice. We ate some ice cream by the port and then walked around some beach paths. It was a cool place because there were all these walkways leading to cabins hanging off cliffs about 50 feet from the ground. Apparently when the tide is high they fish from them but it also gave a nice effect to the beach area.

I passed the 100 day mark. That means that from now until the day I leave there are less than 100 days. I can’t believe how fast it’s all gone. I seems like not long ago that I got here and it feels like I don’t have much time left at all. I can’t believe it’s almost over!
